Present value, also called present discounted value, is a very important financial concept, since it is used to price many things like loans, bonds, stocks but also mortgages.
The economy is based on performing future value calculations. Your money is worth more in the present than in the future, because it can be invested to earn a return. Present value is thereful useful when you need to estimate what number you need to invest now in order to meet a certain future goal. Like buying a home or a new car.
